Lawanda J. Bass
July 10, 1941 - August 7, 2020
Lawanda J. Bass, age 79, longtime resident of Grove, OK, went to be with her Savior on Friday, August 7, 2020 in Tulsa, OK. Lawanda was born on July 10,1941 to Carl and Fern (Mann) Lee in Katie, OK. She grew up in Pernell, OK and graduated from Pernell High School. On August 11, 1960, Lawanda married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Lendell Bass, in Pernell, OK. The couple made their home in Hanston, KS for the next 25 years. The couple moved to Grove in 1984, and together they embarked on many endeavors. They built the Dairy Queen in Grove in 1986 and sold it. They began Antique Alley antique store, located south of Grove, and operated it for several years. Lawanda was a devoted member of First Christian Church of Grove for 35 years where she loved to sing. She was very artistic, and painting and sewing were among her many talents. Nothing brought Lawanda more joy than her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She would drop anything she was doing to be with them and she made each and every one of them feel special. In fact, she made almost everyone she came in contact with feel special. It only took a few conversations with Lawanda to feel like you had known her forever. However, after that point she also would take the liberty of “lining you out” should the need arise. Lawanda treasured her outings with “the Peeps”, her dear friends Gretchen Thompson, Sandy Fernandez, Geri Screaves and Phyllis Sisco. These ladies have countless wonderful memories together and Lawanda felt so blessed to have them in her life. Lawanda was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Fern Lee and one brother, Keith Lee. Left to cherish her memory is her devoted husband of 60 years, Lendell Bass; two children, Kent Bass (Kathy) of Grove and Sonya Turner (Marty) of Collinsville, Oklahoma; grandchildren Brandon Bass, Kelcee Pelton, Jared Crowder, Jayce Crowder, Jeslynn Cole, Kasey Rieff and Heather Garrett; 14 great grandchildren; brother Larry (Bunny) Lee of Hennepin, Oklahoma, and sisters Patsy (James) Morris of Tulsa, and Shirley Worsham of Elmore City, Oklahoma. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 12 from 5 – 7 pm at Nichols-Stephens Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 11 am Thursday, August 13 at the First Christian Church, Grove, Oklahoma. Burial will be at the Foster Cemetery in Foster, Oklahoma at 11am Saturday, August 15, 2020. Donations may be made in Lawanda’s memory to the Cookson Hills Christian Ministry, 60416 Hwy 10, Kansas, Ok 74347. Funeral services will be live streamed on the Nichols-Stephens Funeral & Cremation Services Facebook page on Thursday at 11am.
